The Just swap it cup

(Information in dutch here!)

How does it work?

  1. Ask participating cafés (see bottom of this page) for a reusable black cup when you order your coffee and pay € 5.- only once.

  2. Take your cup (dirty) every time to a participating café and get a clean one for free with your next coffee.

Where does my € 5.- go?

True circularity means that you map all value and waste streams in the chain, connect them with each other and try to neutralise them. If you want to make the coffee chain more sustainable, it makes sense to start by using less or no more paper cups. But we go a step further: the difference between €5 and the cost price of the black cup goes to the Circular Coffee Fund, and is fully invested in permaculture and reforestation at well-known, trusted coffee farmers. More information about the projects can be found here. In this way, you will contribute to sustainability both at the end of the coffee chain and in the beginning: at the coffee plantation where your cup of coffee is grown. Below you can see how the price is structured.

Who is just swap it?

The supplier of the bamboo cups is our German partner Just Swap It. Founder Ulrike Gottschau has already invented a cup exchange system in Germany and offers high quality bamboo cups at good prices. The perfect partner for this project! Their website can be found here.

why bamboo cups ?

  • Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world and is therefore a great renewable resource.

  • Bamboo absorbs up to 35% more CO2 than other forests used for logging.

  • Bamboo does not need pesticides or fertilizers to grow.

  • The production process costs much less CO2 than other reusables.

  • The cup is very sturdy, can even fall to the ground without breaking due to its flexibility.

  • If you use this reusable cup 16 times instead of a paper cup, you have neutralized the production emissions. We don't even count all the damage you save by all those trees that aren't cut down and all those rubbish dumps that don't get fuller!

  • If you still manage to demolish your cup - the bamboo and the binders are completely biodegradable.

what are the disadvantages of this cup?

The bamboo cup is not meant for the microwave. The bamboo cup does contain melamine and formaldehyde as binding agents, which are substances that are unhealthy for our body in high concentrations. In order to tackle this, the Just Swap It cup is produced according to the highest European food safety standards (click here for the declaration of conformity (in German). The substances are only actually released when the cup is exposed to temperatures above 70 degrees for several consecutive hours. So as long as you’re not drinking a cup of coffee on the ridge of a volcano, you will be very fine.

who are the participating cafés?

In the near future we will roll out this project all over the Netherlands, and this list will continue to grow. At the moment are participating:

Amsterdam

  • Back to Black - Weteringstraat

  • Back to Black - Van Halstraat

  • FUKU

  • Keppler Coffee

  • Schuurmansoomkensgrassotti

  • White Label Coffee

  • Bbrood Pontkade

  • YUSU

F.A.Q.

  • Why are the large and small cup the same price (both € 5,-)?

So that you can exchange a large cup for a small cup and vice versa whenever you want, depending on which coffee you choose this time.

  • If I wash my cup myself, will I get the same in return?

To keep it simple, whether you wash the cup or not, you always get a new cup back. This ensures that the barista does not have to "check" whether the cup is clean enough or not. By doing this, we also make sure to follow the hygiene rules and are COVID (and more) proof.
